Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH expands logistics system with simulation

TGW Systems Integration GmbH planned the expansion of a new logistics system for Erwin Müller Versandhaus GmbH. SimPlan created a simulation model to support this planning process.

Initial situation: Expansion to include a shuttle warehouse, order picking and goods-in

The task involved a simulation study to support the planning process, which mapped out the expansion of the system in detail:

  • Shuttle warehouse
  • Picking
  • Goods-in and goods-out

In addition, the control strategies for the individual areas were integrated into the simulation to ensure a realistic and precise analysis.

Objective: To determine key performance indicators under dynamic conditions

The study aimed to support and optimise the planning processes. The focus was on the following key performance indicators under dynamic conditions:

  • Throughput
  • Capacity utilisation
  • Lead times

Furthermore, the aim was to highlight the effects of changes to parameters and structures, in order to enable well-informed decisions as the project progressed.

Solution: Stock, space and shuttle management in Plant Simulation

The simulation solution modelled the following areas:

  • Detailed inventory, space and shuttle management for precise control and monitoring of the warehouse
  • Detailed order management based on data for future scenarios

The software tools Plant Simulation 16.0, SimSuite Logistic and SimAssist were used to enable flexible and dynamic modelling of the logistics processes.

Results: System performance verified, strategies optimised

The simulation study verified the system’s performance and ensured that the planned system met the required specifications. In addition, strategies were optimised to maximise the efficiency of the processes. The analysis of various operational scenarios provided insights that will help to better address future challenges and adapt the system flexibly to changes.

Simulation safeguards the expansion of an established logistics system

The case study demonstrates how simulation carried out alongside the planning phase helps to verify control strategies and system performance even before technical implementation when expanding an existing logistics system.
